83% oppose eliminating national monument lands

When asked whether they would support or oppose “eliminating some national monument lands in Arizona,” 83% of Arizona voters opposed the action, including 61% who strongly opposed it. Opposition included 71% of Republicans, 86% of independents, and 96% of Democrats.

Arizona voters support current monument protections

The survey also asked about four individual national monuments. Majorities of voters said each deserves to be protected as it currently is:

84% — Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni National Monument
72% — Ironwood Forest National Monument
73% — Chiricahua National Monument
70% — Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Public lands protections have broad support

The results extend beyond national monuments. 76% of voters opposed selling off national public lands in Arizona, while 84% preferred keeping national public lands public and protected while balancing conservation with managed recreational and economic uses.

Protecting public lands is not viewed as a partisan issue

93% of Arizona voters agreed that leaders in both political parties should want to protect Arizona’s public lands and that it should not be a partisan issue. That included 87% of Republicans, 95% of independents, and 97% of Democrats.

About the survey

The survey was conducted by Echelon Insights from August 18–22, 2026, among 918 likely Arizona voters. It included a statewide base sample of 500 likely voters and oversamples of Republican/Republican-leaning voters and voters in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. The full statewide sample has a calculated margin of sampling error of ±4.3 percentage points.
